Dílo Tomáše Plesla vyrůstá a souzní s krajem a regionem Pojizeří, ze kterého pochází, ve kterém žije a ze kterého snad i čerpá sílu pro svoji tvorbu. Je to kraj plný rozporů, disharmonií, prolínání, dotýkání se, zlomů a proměn. Je to kraj dramatický a svým způsobem drsný a syrový, vždy však autentický a definovaný energií, která vře pod povrchem. Takové jsou i malby Tomáše Plesla, naplněné energií, která se může projevit jako životadárná, ale i ničivá síla, která může povznášet i destruovat.

Soubor vystavených obrazů z let 2018 až 2021 představuje jakousi zvláštní kombinaci abstraktního malířství, metafyzické malby Giorgia de Chirica a klíčových archetypálních znaků surrealistických autorů. Prolínání městských zákoutí zastaveného času, vyprázdněné atmosféry, pevně definovaných krystalů, kosmických vajec a dalších symbolů sahajících až k podstatě světa a vesmíru s nesmírně citově angažovanými a expresívně pojednanými plochami a poli vytváří malby mimořádného napětí a vnitřního pnutí.

Klíčovou úlohu, stejně jako v celé Pleslově tvorbě, hraje samozřejmě barva, která je nositelkou významu i výrazu a která zároveň stupňuje nebo naopak zmírňuje napětí výše zmíněných elementů obrazů. Je instinktivně hnětena a spontánně přeskupována, prudce usměrňována pravidelným rastrem tahů i ponechávána v divoké živelnosti. Plesl svou dynamickou malbou buduje aktivní plochy zaznamenávající jak určitá specifická dramata, proměnlivost a tep událostí, tak trvale platné konstanty běhu života a světa. Toto prolínání vnitřního a vnějšího, subjektivního a objektivního, každodenního a mimořádného je další z klíčových kvalit Pleslova malířského projevu.

Z obrazů vyznívá i jakási hudebnost, rytmus, harmonie, ale zároveň zaznívají i disharmonické tóny, disonance. Pevně strukturované formy se mění v kácivé verze sebe samých, překvapivé je i narušování řádu, porušování pravidel. Autor nenechává diváka v klidu, útočí na jeho smysly, vybízí ho k pozornosti, ostražitosti, aby ho následně odměnil mimořádnou podobou nahlížených témat. 

Tvorba Tomáše Plesla není prvoplánově líbivá, podbízivě estetická, vyznívá ale svou autenticitou, tvarovou a koloristickou bohatostí, svobodou malířského gesta i pravdivostí výpovědi.

Tomáš Plesl’s work is rooted in and identifies with the landscape of the Jizera Region where he comes from; the region in which he lives, and from which he also draws strength for his work. It is a region full of contradictions, disharmonies, convergences, interactions, fractures, and transformations. It is a dramatic landscape, rough and raw in its own way, but always authentic, and defined by the energy that simmers beneath the surface. So are the paintings of Tomáš Plesl, filled with energy that can manifest itself as both a life-giving and destructive force that can elevate and destroy in equal measure.

The collection of paintings on display from 2018 to 2021 represents a singular combination of abstract painting, the metaphysical works of Giorgio de Chirico, and the key archetypal features of the Surrealists. The intertwining of urban backwaters frozen in time, vacated atmospheres, tightly defined crystals, cosmic eggs, and other symbols reaching to the essence of the world and space, with immensely emotionally engaged expressive surfaces and fields, combine to create a series of paintings of extraordinary tension and inner intensity.

The key element, as in all of Plesl’s work, is of course color, which carries both meaning and expression, and which at the same time intensifies or, on the contrary, relieves the tension of the above-mentioned elements of his paintings. It is kneaded and rearranged by the artist, sharply directed by regular arrays of brushstrokes, but also allowed to run wild with vivid vitality. Plesl’s dynamic art builds active layers that record both defined, specific moments of drama, volatility, and the pulse of events, as well as permanently valid constants of the passage of life and the world. This blending of the inner and the outer, the subjective and the objective, the everyday and the extraordinary is another of the key qualities of Plesl’s art.

The paintings exude a sense of musicality, rhythm, and harmony; yet at the same time, there are notes of discord and dissonance. Tightly structured forms evolve into quirky versions of themselves, surprisingly disrupting the order, and breaking the rules. The artist does not let the viewer sit back, unperturbed; in fact, he assails the senses, urges the viewer to pay attention, to be alert, and subsequently rewards him with the extraordinary form of the issues addressed.

Tomáš Plesl’s work is not conventionally pleasing, and does not pander to the aesthetic, but resonates with authenticity, the richness of form and color, freedom of artistic gesture, and truthfulness of expression.
