Want to experience insects up close? Discover why they are essential to nature, how they live, and why we should help them? On Thursday, April 22, starting at 3:00 PM, Didaktikon will transform into a vibrant insect kingdom where beetles, grasshoppers, stick insects, bumblebees, and other tiny creatures will take center stage.
Insect Day will offer an afternoon full of discovery, creativity, and encounters with a world that is often overlooked, even though nature as we know it wouldn't function without it.
For some, insects are fascinating; for others, a bit scary. But Insect Day will show that even creatures with antennae, wing covers, or lots of legs can surprise, intrigue, and sometimes even inspire. The program is designed primarily for parents with children, but it will be enjoyed by anyone who wants to get a glimpse into the world of our planet's smallest inhabitants. Admission to the event is free.
Visitors can look forward to five different stations and two special workshops. At one of them, they will get to meet live representatives of the insect world up close. They can encounter grasshoppers, stick insects, beetles, or even cockroaches. And the bravest ones might even dare to meet the legendary spider Růženka, whom they will be able to hold in their hand.
The second workshop will offer the chance to create your own insect hotel for solitary bees. Participants can then take it home and help tiny pollinators in their own neighborhood. Due to limited capacity, advance registration is required for the workshop.
Other stations will show visitors who our insect roommates are and what role they play in the environment around us. They will also learn how to make their home a place where uninvited insect visitors won't easily get in, who a bumblebee keeper is, and how a bumblebee colony actually works. There will also be creative workshops with an insect theme, offering space for playfulness and imagination.
Throughout Insect Day, visitors will be guided by entomologists from the Faculty of Science at Charles University, experts from the National Agricultural and Food Research Center , and members of the Čmeláci PLUS association. Thanks to them, the event will not only be fun, but you will also learn a lot of interesting information.
