Vita Contemplativa by Rufina Bazlova is a participatory art project centred on the question of agency, understood as the capacity to perceive oneself as an agent of one’s own actions and decisions. It focuses on the shifting boundary between what we can influence, what we cannot influence, and what we merely perceive as impossible.
The project emerged from the artist’s personal experience of burnout and a crisis of meaning following several years of intensive artivist practice engaging with political violence, war, solidarity, and collective memory. Yet this experience is not merely an autobiographical point of departure. Burnout can also be understood here as a symptom of a broader social condition in which personal responsibility and the imperative to respond encounter growing uncertainty and our limited capacity to influence processes that fundamentally shape our lives. Where does our capacity to act end, and where does the idea of what we should still be capable of doing begin? And at what point does the inability to change a situation turn into a sense of personal failure?

Rufina Bazlova is a Belarus-born, Prague-based intermedia artist whose interdisciplinary and participatory practice explores collective memory, political violence, identity, and solidarity. Working across textiles, digital media, installation, performance, and social practice, she investigates how traditional visual languages can be reactivated in relation to contemporary social and political realities. Since 2021, she has led the international participatory project #FramedinBelarus, dedicated to political prisoners in Belarus. She is a recipient of an EU4Culture grant, a CEC ArtsLink Fellowship at HPAC Chicago, and Gaude Polonia 2026. Her work has been presented internationally, including at the International Triennial of Textile in Łódź and the Matter of Art Biennale in Prague.
