This summer Christopher Nolan took the box office by storm with the release of his IMAX epic The Odyssey. Much of the conversation among critics has revolved around the ways in which Nolan was or was not faithful to Homer’s epic. The Odyssey and the character of Odysseus have been employed and reinterpreted countless times throughout history. From Virgil to Dante; from Tennyson to the Coen brothers. In this talk we will explore some of the artistic choices Nolan made for his film and discuss the challenges of adapting pre-Christian stories in a post-Christian world
