Politics in the UK is in a constant state of flux. Yet the change occurring now appears to be the most significant in nearly a century. The bipartisan system that has defined Westminster and the entire country for decades is collapsing as both traditionally dominant parties, Labour and the Conservatives, are losing support in the opinion polls, parliamentary by-elections and council elections. The political landscape is being reshaped by new political forces adopting more radical views on both ends of the spectrum—Farage’s Reform UK on the right and the Greens, led by their new leader Zack Polanski, on the left.
If you want to learn more about the increasing fragmentation and polarisation of British politics and society, the Institute of International Studies’ students’ union (SIMS) and the Department of European Studies warmly invite you to a debate with Dr Alan Butt Philip, Jean Monnet Reader and later Honorary Reader at the University of Bath (1992–2015), providing unique and insightful perspectives on various aspects of UK politics. The event, funded by the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, will take place on 16th April 2026 at 5 pm in Hybernská Campus, room B.1.
