What does sustainable music of today and tomorrow sound like? The Sustain: Music and Sustainability project connects art, music creation, concert and production activities with environmental thinking. The topic of sustainability in connection with music has not been very much in the forefront in the Czech Republic, but this programme is changing the game. Conferences, debates, panel discussions, workshops and hands-on sound demonstrations and installations - all focused on the present and future of music in the age of climate change.

‍The first event will reveal how the music industry is approaching sustainability - from virtual concerts to a return to roots and nature. It will offer a debate on music operations with US tour manager of the Chemical Brothers and Massive Attack James Baseley and others. The Lada Choir and singer-songwriter Barbora Hora will provide a musical return to roots.

Program:

17:00-19:00 Experience VR concert (A.0 Cirkulární hub)

Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with virtual concerts and different forms of music making in a virtual reality environment. There will be popular and lesser-known applications such as BeatSaber, SynthRiders, Maestro and others that bring interactive musical experiences and convey music to us in a new, alternative way. This event will provide an opportunity to explore how modern technology and video games intersect with the music industry and how they can help to transform or sustain it.

Organised by: CyberSpaceLab

19:00-19:30 Performance by the Lada Women's Choir (E.0 Sál)

The essence of the Lada choir is the joy of singing and coming together. Its members choose songs of a girlish and feminine nature - love songs, wedding songs, lawn ballads and others, and try to interpret them according to the carriers of folk culture, especially those born earlier. They rehearse mostly in their Prague kitchens, perform at various festivals, gallery openings, participate in artistic performances and collaborate with musicians of other genres. In recent years they have also been singing and playing in folk music. In addition to realizing musical offerings, they would like to continue to explore more deeply the way of life, singing and playing of our ancestors, also in collaboration with ethnomusicologists. The Lada Women's Choir released their debut album Všelijake kvety in December 2023, which was nominated for a Radio Head Award in the world music category.

19:45-20:45 Debate with James Baseley and others (E.0 Sál)

A debate exploring the complex topic of production sustainability in concert operations and the very connection between artists and promoters and nature. Can the Czech Republic host sustainable music events? What does it entail? And what does a world tour look like in terms of sustainable principles? A debate with Czech and international guests.

Speakers:

  • James Baseley (USA) - American tour manager from Little Fella Production, who has done the Chemical Brothers big tour, the Coldplay sustainable tour and is now preparing the Massive Attack world tour.
  • Tomáš Suchánek (Bukolika festival organizer)
  • Tadeáš Polák (musician from the band Severní nástupiště)

Hosted by David Pomahač

21:00-22:00 Concert of Barbara Hora (E.0 Sál)

In her work, singer-songwriter Barbora Hora accentuates her relationship with nature, telling stories in a tender way in which she addresses the laws and principles of nature. The Bukolika festival, which takes place in the heart of the forest near Přelouč, works with a similar atmosphere. These choices naturally force a production consciousness and offer visitors at least a partial answer to the question of the hardly imaginable harmony between the environment and the concert operation. Visitors will get a unique opportunity to learn more about the topic of production sustainability from the perspective of artists and organizers who are looking for new ways.
